History of Biriyani - The Original Version

History of Biryani, 1800 years old. An examination of Biryani's history takes us back to the 2nd century AD.

But even before that time, the ancient Tamil country people had prepared a meal similar to Biriyani. The name is “ஊன்சோறு - Oonsoru” here Soru meaning rice.

Historical traces of Oonsoru (Biriyani) is found in Tamil Sangam literature.

How is oonsoru prepared?

Oonsoru is prepared by cooking the meat with rice, ghee, turmeric, pepper and calophyllum inophyllum (Indian-laurel) leaves.

In those ancient days, Oonsoru was one of the most popular dishes. 

From the Monarchs till the common man have been fond of this dish. 

There is another name for this dish, “ஊன்துவை அடிசில் - Oondhuvai Adisil” (Reference also cited in புறநானூறு - Purananooru - one of the eight books of the Tamil Sangam Literature)
