ரவா லட்டு (Rava Laddu) Recipe

Laddus first came to be used as medicines!

The origin of this laddu was more because of the medicinal properties that the ingredients used proffered than as a sweet.

In ancient days before English medicines arrived to our country, treating various diseases by Siddhar Medicine / Ayurvedic Medicine was prominent and is based on ancient writings that rely on a “natural” and holistic approach to physical and mental health.

Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest medical systems and remains one of ancient Tamizh traditional health care systems.

For easier consumption, Maruthuvars used to coat the medicine with jaggery or honey syrup and shaped into small balls.

During my childhood, I still remember my great grand mother who is a high level eminent Maruthuvar used to prepare small balls coated with honey to treat various health problems.

Discovery of the laddu when a Maruthuvar (medicine man) assistant to cover up the extra ghee he poured in a mix turned them into small roundels that eventually took the shape of the smooth egg shape balls we see today.

The ancient legend of Gilgamesh, the Sumerian King mentions Enkidu’s diet as consisting of, among other interesting things, worms, figs, cucumbers, honey and bread made of sesame flour, which was again made into a roundel or a laddu so that he could have it with ease, as we know #sumerians are #ancienttamils
